“…To improve the IS3 rate of fire , the students of the Military Armored Forces Academy came with solution to install 2 two-layer pistol-style magazines. The magazines served as ammo racks and were operated electrically, using hydraulics. One magazine contained HE shells, one contained AP shells. In case of electric (hydraulic) failure, the magazines could be also operated manually. In order to fit the entire magazine into the turret, the inside had to be significantly reworked and the tank crew was to be reduced to three men, the design of the turret had to be changed somewhat as well. Additionally, since less recoil was required to make the project functional, the gun recoil compensator mechanism would also have to be changed. This project was however never accepted by the military and was basically just a thought exercise…“
“Per migliorare il rateo di fuoco dell’IS3, gli studenti del Military Armored Forces Academy giunsero alla soluzione di installare 2 due caricatori a strati. I caricatori servivano come stive munizioni e operavano elettricamente, con energia idraulica. Un caricatore conteneva HE , l’altro AP. Nel caso di problemi all’impianto elettro-idraluico, i caricatori potevano essere azionati anche manualmente. Per installare l’intero caricatore nella torretta, l’interno doveva essere rielaborato significativamente e l’equipaggio doveva essere ridotto a tre uomini, il disegno della torretta doveva essere anch’esso modificato. Inoltre, il meccanismo compensatore del rinculo doveva essere migliorato al fine di rendere funzionali le modifiche. Questo progetto non è stato però mai accettato dai militari ed è stato fondamentalmente solo un esercizio di pensiero “
